Al-Ula
The Jewel of Saudi Arabia

Al-Ula: The Capital of Monuments

Al-Ula is a city full of archaeological treasures that hold the secrets of the past. Located in the northwestern part of Saudi Arabia, in the province of Madinah, it is one of the most important tourist destinations in the country. Al-Ula has the honor of being home to the first Saudi UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique place, known as Mada'in Saleh or Hegra, is an extremely interesting archaeological area that dates back to the Nabataean kingdom. It is also often associated with the place where the Thamud people lived, to which the Prophet Salih (AS) was sent. According to the Qur'an, the Thamuda were an idolatrous people who suffered punishment in the form of earthquakes and lightning for their devotion to idols. Mada'in Saleh is located 20 km north of the city of Al-Ula.

Hegra also played a key role as a station on the former pilgrimage route to Mecca. It was an important point where pilgrims could rest, stock up on water and supplies. It was also the main trade route. The famous fourteenth-century traveler, Ibn Battuta, mentioned in his accounts the red tombs carved into the rock at Al-Hijr (Hegra), which were one of the most emblematic elements of the site. At that time, Hegra was uninhabited. Researchers attribute the extraordinary durability of this ancient site to the extremely dry climatic conditions and the lack of any interference after its original inhabitants abandoned it.

The history of Al-UliAl-Ula was of great strategic importance due to its location on the famous "Incense Road". The walled city was founded in the 6th century BC, and the influence of different cultures is clearly visible thanks to the rich history of the region. For example, archaeological evidence indicates that the burial mounds and Al-Hijr date back to the Bronze Age#SzlakKadzidła #Historia #StarożytneMiasta #AlUla #Kultura

Al-Ula was also the site of the biblical city of Dedan. For the next four hundred years, the area was under the rule of the Lihyan Kingdom. For centuries, the city remained one of the most important caravan centers in northern Arabia. In later times, after the Nabataeans took power, the region remained under their rule until 106 CE, when the Romans captured the capital of the Nabataeans – Petra. It was then that Mada'in Saleh was established as the new capital of the Nabataeans.

Between 1901 and 1908, the Ottoman Empire built the Hejaz railway line in the region. Both Mada'in Saleh (Hegra) and Al-Ula became important stations on this route, which connected Damascus with Medina, constituting a key element of transport during this period.

The geography and cultural life of Al-UliAl-Ula is an oasis, hidden in a desert valley, whose fertile land and sufficient water make it a place that has attracted settlers for centuries. For this reason, the city was of inestimable importance on the historical Incense Route. The Al-Ula Heritage Village, also known as Ad-Deerah, has been inhabited since ancient times, and its inhabitants lived here until the 20th century. Today, the abandoned clay houses offer a deep insight into the cultural life of the former settlers. The buildings in this part of the city are placed very close to each other, creating the impression of one huge complex surrounded by external walls. Narrow, winding alleys act as paths through which you can walk, discovering life from centuries ago. In the southern part of the old town there is also a sundial, which is a testimony to the old technologies of time measurement. The old market has also recently been restored, and it is once again teeming with life, offering tourists the opportunity to commune with the history and culture of this wonderful oasis.
